Installing a Minecraft skin pack is quick on most devices: open the .mcpack file, let the game import it, then equip the skin in the Dressing Room. The exact steps vary by platform, so pick your device below for a step-by-step guide with screenshots.

Whether you are buying a pack from the in-game Marketplace or downloading a free custom skin pack, this page covers what works where and how to get your skin equipped.

On consoles (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) you can buy and equip Marketplace skin packs and use the Character Creator, but you cannot import custom .mcpack files or single PNG skins.

Marketplace packs vs custom packs

There are two ways to get a skin pack in Minecraft Bedrock:

  • Marketplace packs. You buy them with Minecoins inside the game. Once purchased, the pack is tied to your Microsoft account and appears on every device you sign in to. No file to download or move.
  • Custom packs. These are .mcpack files you download from the internet (like the free packs on this site). You open the file and the game imports it onto that specific device. Custom packs do not sync between devices. You need to import them on each one separately.

Both types show up in the same place: the Dressing Room under Classic Skins. The only difference is how they get there.

Want to try a custom pack right now? Download our free skin pack and follow the steps below. Or build your own with the Skin Pack Creator tool: no software to install.

The general steps (how it works on most devices)

Regardless of platform, the core process is the same. Here is the official flow (shown for Windows, but the same idea applies on Android and iOS):

  1. Get the .mcpack file. Download it from a website, or buy a pack from the in-game Marketplace.
  2. Open the file. On Windows, double-click the .mcpack. On Android or iOS, tap it and choose Minecraft when asked. The game launches and you should see a message that the import has started, followed by a "imported successfully" confirmation.
  3. Open the Dressing Room. From the main menu, click or tap the Dressing Room button.
  4. Go to Classic Skins. If the game asks you to choose between Character Creator and Classic Skin, pick Classic Skin. On some versions you may need to tap the green clothes-hanger Featured Skins button first.
  5. Equip the skin. Find your new skin in the list, select it, and click Equip.

If the skin does not appear after importing, the most common fix is to turn off Only Allow Trusted Skins in Settings → General. See the troubleshooting guide for more.

Where to find your skins in the Dressing Room

Once a skin pack is imported or purchased, your skins live in a few places inside the Dressing Room:

  • Classic Skins: this is where imported custom packs and Marketplace skin packs appear. Each pack is listed by name, and you expand it to see the individual skins.
  • Owned Skins: single skins you imported directly (via "Choose New Skin") show up here, separate from any pack.
  • Featured Skins (green clothes-hanger button): on some game versions this button is the entry point to your custom and Marketplace skins. Tap it, then pick a skin and click Equip.

If you see a warning that equipping a Classic Skin will replace a Character Creator character in the world, that is normal: you can switch back at any time from the Dressing Room.

Consoles: what you can and cannot do

On Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch the rules are different:

  • Marketplace skin packs: fully supported. Buy with Minecoins (or the platform's equivalent), then equip in the Dressing Room.
  • Character Creator: build a character piece by piece (body, hair, clothing, accessories). Free and paid items are available.
  • Custom .mcpack files: not supported. There is no way to import a skin pack file on consoles.
  • Single custom PNG skins: not supported. The "Choose New Skin" import option is not available on console editions.

If you use a custom skin on your PC or phone, it will not appear on your console. Custom skins are stored on the device you import them to and do not sync across platforms.

If it does not work

Most install problems come down to one of these five causes:

  1. "Only Allow Trusted Skins" is on. Go to Settings → General and toggle it off. This is the number-one reason custom skins do not appear.
  2. The .mcpack has an extra folder inside. The manifest.json must be at the very top level of the zip, not inside a wrapper folder.
  3. JSON syntax error. A missing comma or wrong quote in manifest.json or skins.json will silently break the pack. Validate both files in any free JSON checker.
  4. Wrong geometry value. It must be exactly geometry.humanoid.custom (Classic) or geometry.humanoid.customSlim (Slim). It is case-sensitive.
  5. Texture file name mismatch. The texture field in skins.json must match the PNG file name exactly, and the PNG must sit in the pack root.

FAQ

Do skin packs carry over to other devices?

Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account, so they appear on any device you sign in to. Custom .mcpack files are stored on the device you import them to. You will need to import them again on each PC, phone or tablet.

Can I install a skin pack on Xbox, PlayStation or Switch?

You can buy and equip Marketplace skin packs on all three consoles. However, importing custom .mcpack files or single PNG skins is not supported on any console.

What is the difference between Classic and Slim skins?

Classic skins have 4-pixel-wide arms (Steve-style). Slim skins have 3-pixel-wide arms (Alex-style). When you import a single skin, the game asks you to choose. Picking the wrong one makes the arms look cut off or shows a gap. Just re-import and choose the other option.

Do I need to install anything to use a skin pack?

No. You only need Minecraft Bedrock Edition. Open the .mcpack file and the game handles the rest. For making your own pack, the Skin Pack Creator runs entirely in your browser.

Where do imported skin packs get stored?

They go into the skin_packs folder inside com.mojang on your device. On Windows (Microsoft Store build) the full path is %localappdata%\Packages\Microsoft.MinecraftUWP_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalState\games\com.mojang\skin_packs. You do not need to navigate there manually: opening the .mcpack file handles it for you.
