About · YouTube

This guide covers everything you need to know about getting skin packs on Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. It explains how to buy and equip Marketplace skin packs, how the Character Creator works as an alternative, and why custom .mcpack files cannot officially be imported on consoles (and what about the workarounds).

The short answer: custom skin packs and custom PNG skins are not officially supported on Xbox. There is no file browser, no "open with Minecraft" option, and no official way to sideload a .mcpack. Your best options are the in-game Marketplace, the Character Creator (free and paid items), and Realms Plus / Marketplace Pass skins. Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account, so a pack you buy on Xbox is also available on your phone, tablet or PC running Bedrock.

Quick answer

  • Custom .mcpack files are not officially supported on Xbox. This is a platform policy, not a bug.
  • Marketplace skin packs are the main way to get new skins. Buy with Minecoins, then equip in the Dressing Room.
  • Character Creator lets you build a character piece by piece (body, hair, clothing, accessories) using free and paid items.
  • Realms Plus / Marketplace Pass subscriptions include monthly skin and Character Creator items.
  • Purchases follow your Microsoft account across all Bedrock devices (Xbox, Windows, mobile).

Get skin packs from the Marketplace on Xbox One & Xbox Series X|S

The in-game Marketplace is the supported way to download skin packs on Xbox. You need a Microsoft account and some Minecoins (or a free pack). Here is the step-by-step process:

  1. From the main menu, select the Marketplace button.
  2. Select the Skins tab on the left sidebar. You can also browse Featured or New Releases.
  3. Select a skin pack to open its detail page. You will see the pack name, creator, preview, and price in Minecoins (or "Free").
  4. Select Buy (or Unlock for free packs). Confirm the purchase. The pack downloads automatically to your console.
  5. Go to the Dressing Room.
  6. Select Classic Skins (or Owned Skins, depending on your game version). Your newly purchased pack will be listed there.
  7. Choose the skin you want, then select Equip.

Marketplace purchases are tied to your Microsoft account, not the console. If you sign in on a Windows PC or a mobile device, the same skin packs will appear there. You do not need to buy them again.

Can you install custom skin packs on Xbox?

No. Custom skin packs (.mcpack files) and custom PNG skins are not officially supported on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. This is a deliberate platform policy from Microsoft and Mojang. There is no file manager integration, no "open with Minecraft" option, and no developer folder you can drop files into.

The official position is clear: custom skin import works on Windows and mobile devices, but not on consoles. A Minecraft support FAQ states, "We do not have plans for importing custom skins on consoles."

If you see a tutorial online claiming you can sideload a .mcpack onto Xbox, it will not work. Do not download files from untrusted sources hoping to bypass this.

What you can do instead:

  • Marketplace skin packs: hundreds of free and paid packs from creators. Buy once, use on all your Bedrock devices.
  • Character Creator lets you build a unique character piece by piece: body type, hair, eyes, mouth, clothing, accessories, capes and emotes. Many items are free; others cost Minecoins.
  • Realms Plus / Marketplace Pass: a subscription that includes monthly skin packs and Character Creator items at no extra cost.

These options give you a lot of variety without needing to import files. And because Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account, a pack you unlock on Xbox is instantly available on your phone or PC too.

What about the workarounds people mention?

You may have seen claims online that custom skins can work on Xbox. Here is the honest picture:

Set it on PC or phone first

The idea: import a PNG skin in the Dressing Room on Windows or mobile, then sign in with the same Microsoft account on your Xbox and hope it appears. In the past this worked for some Xbox players. Recent reports (1.21.x) say it now fails with the message "Local skin could not be loaded" and the game falls back to a default skin (Steve or Alex).

Trying it is harmless, it is just an in-game setting. But do not count on it working, and do not be surprised if it stops at any update.

Servers and Realms with their own skins

Some servers and Realms provide their own skin packs to every player who joins, including console players. This is a normal, supported feature. However, the skin is the server's skin, not your own, and it only appears while you are on that server.

DNS tricks, third-party apps and modified consoles

Various "tricks" circulate online, such as changing your console's DNS settings, using third-party connection apps, or modifying the console itself. These carry real risks: account security problems, scams, and violating the terms of service (which can lead to a ban). We do not recommend any of them and will not explain how they work.

Want this officially? Add your voice to the feature requests on the official Minecraft Feedback site. The more players who ask, the more likely Mojang is to take a look.

Use a single custom skin on Xbox

On Windows and mobile, you can import a single PNG skin through the Dressing Room: go to Classic Skins, select Choose New Skin, pick the image, and select whether it is a Classic (4-pixel arms) or Slim (3-pixel arms) model. The skin then appears under Owned Skins.

On Xbox, this option does not exist. There is no "Choose New Skin" button that opens a file picker, and no way to point the game at a PNG on your console's storage. The Dressing Room on consoles only shows Marketplace packs, Character Creator characters, and Realms Plus items.

A note on cross-device sync: custom skins you import on a PC or phone do not automatically appear on your Xbox. They are stored on the device where you imported them. There have been user reports that a locally imported skin briefly appeared on a linked Xbox in older game versions, but this stopped working in recent 1.21.x updates and is not an official feature. Do not rely on it.

If you really want a specific custom look on Xbox, your best bet is to find a similar Marketplace pack or recreate the look using Character Creator pieces.

Skin pack not showing? Fixes for Xbox

If a skin pack you bought or expect to see is missing on your Xbox, work through these checks:

  1. Make sure you are signed in to the right Microsoft account. Marketplace purchases are tied to the account that bought them. If you switched accounts, sign back in to the one that made the purchase.
  2. Update Minecraft to the latest version. Older builds (below 1.18.30) had a bug where the Equip button was missing. Updating resolves this.
  3. Check the correct tab in the Dressing Room. Marketplace packs appear under Classic Skins or Owned Skins. Character Creator characters are under the Character Creator tab. They do not mix.
  4. Cross-platform multiplayer restriction. Some skin packs are flagged and will not work in cross-platform games. You will see a message: "The Skin that you have equipped is from a content pack that is not allowed in cross-platform multiplayer games." Switch to a different skin for those sessions.
  5. Server-side restriction. If a skin works in single-player but not on a specific server, the server may have custom skins disabled. You will see: "This server has custom skins disabled. You can switch to a different skin in the dressing room."
  6. Free up storage space. If a download or import fails, the error may read "Something went wrong. This may be due to insufficient storage space." Delete unused content and retry.

If none of the above helps and you are trying to import a custom .mcpack, the fix is simple: it is not supported on Xbox. Use the Marketplace or Character Creator instead.

FAQ

Do skin packs carry over to other devices?

Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account. Buy a pack on Xbox and it will be available on Windows, Android, and iOS (any Bedrock Edition device) when you sign in with the same account. Custom skins you import on a PC or phone, however, stay on that device and do not sync to Xbox or anywhere else.

Are skin packs free on Xbox?

Some are. The Marketplace includes both free and paid skin packs. Free packs can be unlocked at no cost. Paid packs use Minecoins, which you purchase with real money. Realms Plus and Marketplace Pass subscriptions also include free monthly skin and Character Creator items.

Can I make my own skin pack for Xbox?

You can create a skin pack (using tools like Blockbench or the Skin Pack Creator on this site), but you cannot install it on Xbox. Custom .mcpack files only work on Windows and mobile. On Xbox, you are limited to Marketplace packs and the Character Creator. If you want to learn how packs are structured, see How to make a skin pack.

What is the difference between a Classic Skin and a Character Creator character?

A Classic Skin is a full-body PNG texture applied to the standard character model. It cannot be modified piece by piece. A Character Creator character is built from individual items (body, hair, eyes, clothing, accessories) that you mix and match. You can switch between the two at any time in the Dressing Room. Equipping a Classic Skin while a Character Creator is active will replace it in the world, but you can switch back.

Is it really impossible to get custom skins on Xbox?

Not officially. On Windows and phones you can import your own skin file, but Minecraft on Xbox only lets you pick default skins, Character Creator items, and skins you own from the Marketplace (including free ones). Some players report that a skin set on PC or phone with the same Microsoft account also shows up on Xbox, but this has worked inconsistently and is reported broken in recent 1.21 versions, so don't count on it. Some servers and Realms have their own skins that console players can wear while playing there. There are unofficial tricks floating around (changing your console's DNS, third-party servers, or modifying the console). We don't recommend them: they can break at any update, route your connection through people you don't know, and modifying a console can get you banned. If custom skins matter to you, play on PC or mobile, or add your voice on feedback.minecraft.net.
