How to Install Skin Packs on Nintendo Switch (Minecraft Bedrock)
This guide covers everything you need to know about getting skin packs working on your Nintendo Switch. It explains how to buy and equip Marketplace skin packs, how the Character Creator works as an alternative, and why custom .mcpack files cannot officially be imported on this platform (and what about the workarounds).
The quick answer: custom skin packs and custom single-skin PNGs are not officially supported on Nintendo Switch. Your options are Marketplace skin packs (bought with Minecoins) and the built-in Character Creator. Both are free to use once you have the items, and both work the same way in the Dressing Room.
Quick answer
- Custom .mcpack files: not officially supported on Nintendo Switch. There is no file browser or import option.
- Custom single-skin PNGs: also not officially supported. You can't upload a skin image on Switch.
- Marketplace skin packs: fully supported. Buy with Minecoins, then equip in the Dressing Room.
- Character Creator: build a character piece by piece. Free items and Marketplace items both work.
- Sync: Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account across devices. Custom skins (on other platforms) do not sync.
Get skin packs from the Marketplace on Nintendo Switch
The Marketplace is the only way to add new skin packs on Nintendo Switch. You buy a pack with Minecoins, it downloads to your console, and you equip it from the Dressing Room. Purchases are tied to your Microsoft account, so if you buy a pack on Switch it is also available on your phone, PC or Xbox.
- From the main menu, select the Marketplace button (the shopping-bag icon).
- Select the Skins tab on the left. You can also browse Featured or New Releases.
- Select a skin pack to open its page. You will see the included skins, the price in Minecoins, and an Equip or Buy button.
- If the pack costs Minecoins, confirm the purchase. You need a Microsoft account linked to your Switch profile to buy Minecoins.
- Once downloaded, open the Dressing Room from the main menu.
- Go to Classic Skins (or Owned Skins on some versions). Find your new pack in the list.
- Select the skin you want, then select Equip.
If you see the message "You need to unlock this pack to equip the skin you selected", it means the pack is still downloading. Wait a moment and try again.

Can you install custom skin packs on Switch?
No. Nintendo Switch does not officially support importing custom skin packs (.mcpack files) or custom single-skin PNG images. There is no file manager, no "Choose New Skin" import button, and no official way to sideload a pack from a USB drive or the internet.
This is a platform limitation set by Mojang and Nintendo. The official position is that custom skin import works on Windows and mobile devices only. Console players (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch) are limited to Marketplace content and the Character Creator.
Do not trust any tutorial that claims you can transfer a .mcpack file to a Switch. It will not work. The game has no import mechanism on this platform.
Your alternatives on Switch:
- Marketplace skin packs: hundreds of free and paid packs from community creators.
- Character Creator: build a unique character piece by piece (body, hair, clothing, accessories). Many pieces are free; others are bought with Minecoins.
- Realms Plus / Marketplace Pass: subscription services that include monthly skin and Character Creator items.
If you have a custom skin pack you made on PC or phone, you can still use it on those devices. It simply will not appear on your Switch.
What about the workarounds people mention?
You may have seen claims online that custom skins can work on Nintendo Switch. Here is the honest picture:
Set it on PC or phone first
The idea: import a PNG skin in the Dressing Room on Windows or mobile, then sign in with the same Microsoft account on your Switch and hope it appears. We found no reliable reports of this working on Nintendo Switch. It is not an official feature and should not be expected to work.
Trying it is harmless. It is just an in-game setting. But do not count on it working, and do not be surprised if it never appears.
Servers and Realms with their own skins
Some servers and Realms provide their own skin packs to every player who joins, including console players. This is a normal, supported feature. However, the skin is the server's skin, not your own, and it only appears while you are on that server.
DNS tricks, third-party apps and modified consoles
Various "tricks" circulate online: changing your console's DNS settings, using third-party connection apps, or modifying the console itself. These carry real risks: account security problems, scams, and violating the terms of service (which can lead to a ban). We do not recommend any of them and will not explain how they work.
Want this officially? Add your voice to the feature requests on the official Minecraft Feedback site. The more players who ask, the more likely Mojang is to take a look.
Use a single custom skin
On Windows and mobile, you can import a single PNG skin through the Dressing Room: Classic Skins → Choose New Skin, pick the image, and select Classic or Slim model. That option does not exist on Nintendo Switch.
There is no "Choose New Skin" button, no file picker, and no way to point the game at an image on your console. The only single-skin options on Switch are:
- Skins included in a Marketplace skin pack you have purchased.
- The default characters (Steve, Alex, Sunny, Kai, Makena, Zuri, Efe, Ari, Noor), each available in Classic (wide) or Slim (narrow) arm style.
- A Character Creator build, which replaces the classic skin entirely.
If you equip a Classic Skin while a Character Creator character is active in a world, the game will switch to the Classic Skin. You can switch back at any time from the Dressing Room.
Skin pack not showing? Fixes
If a Marketplace skin pack is missing or a skin looks wrong on your Switch, work through these fixes:
- Update the game. The Equip button was missing in versions below 1.18.30. Make sure you are on the latest version from the eShop.
- Check "Only Allow Trusted Skins." Go to Settings → General and make sure Only Allow Trusted Skins is toggled off. If it is on, some packs will not appear.
- Wait for the download to finish. Large packs can take a while on a slow connection. The pack will not show in the Dressing Room until the download completes.
- Restart Minecraft. Close the game fully (hold the Switch button → quit) and reopen it. This refreshes the skin list.
- Check your Microsoft account link. If you bought the pack on another device, make sure the same Microsoft account is signed in on your Switch. Purchases follow the account, not the console.
- Arms look cut off or odd. This usually means a Classic (wide-arm) skin is being rendered as Slim, or vice versa. On Switch this is set by the pack itself; try a different skin from the same pack.
- Free up storage. If the Switch is nearly full, the download may have failed silently. Delete unused titles and retry.
If none of the above helps, the pack may have been removed from the Marketplace catalogue. In that case you would need to repurchase it if it returns, or choose a different pack.
FAQ
Do skin packs carry over to other devices?
Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account. If you buy a skin pack on Switch, it is also available on your phone, PC, Xbox or PlayStation. Just sign in with the same account. Custom imported skins (on PC or mobile) do not sync to other devices; you must import them separately on each one.
Are skin packs free?
Some are. The Marketplace includes both free and paid skin packs. Paid packs cost Minecoins, which you buy with real money. The Character Creator also has free pieces as well as Marketplace items.
Can I make my own skin pack for Switch?
You can create a skin pack (using tools like Blockbench or the Skin Pack Creator on this site), but you cannot install it on Switch. Custom packs only work on Windows and mobile. On Switch you are limited to Marketplace and Character Creator content.
Is it really impossible to get custom skins on Nintendo Switch?
Not officially. On Windows and phones you can import your own skin file, but Minecraft on Switch only lets you pick default skins, Character Creator items, and skins you own from the Marketplace (including free ones). We found no reliable reports of the PC/phone-sync trick working on Switch. Some servers and Realms have their own skins that console players can wear while playing there. There are unofficial tricks floating around (changing your console's DNS, third-party servers, or modifying the console). We don't recommend them: they can break at any update, route your connection through people you don't know, and modifying a console can get you banned. If custom skins matter to you, play on PC or mobile, or add your voice on feedback.minecraft.net.
What is the difference between a Classic Skin and a Character Creator?
A Classic Skin is a full-body PNG image applied to the character. It cannot be modified piece by piece. A Character Creator character is built from individual items (hair, eyes, clothing, accessories) and can be mixed and matched. You can switch between the two at any time in the Dressing Room.
Can I use a skin pack in multiplayer on Switch?
Yes, most Marketplace skin packs work in cross-platform multiplayer. A few packs are restricted and will show a message like "The Skin that you have equipped is from a content pack that is not allowed in cross-platform multiplayer games." If that happens, pick a different skin.
Where do I learn to make skin packs?
Check out the How to make a skin pack guide and the Skin Pack Creator tool. You can build a pack on your PC or phone and use it on those platforms.
