About · YouTube

Minecraft Bedrock on a Chromebook is the Android app from Google Play, so installing skin packs works the same way it does on Android. You can grab packs from the in-game Marketplace or import a custom .mcpack file through the Files app. There are no official Chromebook-specific steps. The process follows the Android method.

Important: this guide is for Minecraft Bedrock (the free app from Google Play). It is not for Minecraft Education, which is a separate product with its own rules and does not support custom skin packs the same way.

Quick answer

  • Marketplace packs: open Minecraft → Dressing Room → Marketplace → buy or unlock with Minecoins → equip under Classic Skins or Owned Skins.
  • Custom .mcpack: download the file, open it from the Files app, choose Minecraft when prompted. The pack imports automatically.
  • Single custom skin: Dressing Room → Classic Skins → Choose New Skin → pick a PNG → select Classic or Slim model.
  • Not working? Check that Only Allow Trusted Skins is turned off in Settings → General.

Chromebook (ChromeOS) runs the Android version of Minecraft Bedrock. The steps below are the same as on any Android device. See the Android guide for the closest official match.

Get skin packs from the Marketplace on Chromebook (ChromeOS)

Marketplace skin packs are the easiest option. You buy or unlock them with Minecoins, and the pack downloads straight into the game. Purchases follow your Microsoft account, so if you already own a pack on another device it should appear here too.

  1. Open Minecraft on your Chromebook.
  2. Click the Dressing Room button on the main menu.
  3. Select the Marketplace tab (you may see it listed as "Skins" or "Featured" in the sidebar).
  4. Browse or search for a skin pack. Free packs are available; paid packs cost Minecoins.
  5. Click Buy or Unlock. You will need a Microsoft account and a valid payment method (or existing Minecoins balance).
  6. Once downloaded, go to Classic Skins or Owned Skins in the Dressing Room.
  7. Select the skin you want and click Equip.

If you see a message saying "You need to unlock this pack to equip the skin you selected," it means the pack is owned but not yet downloaded on this device. Open the Marketplace and download it first.

Install a custom skin pack (.mcpack)

Custom skin packs come as a .mcpack file. Because Chromebook runs the Android app, you install it the same way you would on a phone or tablet: open the file and let Minecraft handle the import.

  1. Download the .mcpack file to your Chromebook (it will land in your Downloads folder).
  2. Open the Files app (the folder icon in the shelf).
  3. Find the .mcpack file in Downloads.
  1. Tap or click the file. A dialog will ask which app to open it with, choose Minecraft.
  2. Minecraft launches and imports the pack. You should see a message confirming the import was successful.
  3. Go to Dressing Room → Classic Skins. Your new pack should be listed there.
  4. Select a skin from the pack and click Equip.

Not officially documented for Chromebook. Microsoft has not published Chromebook-specific steps. The method above follows the Android process and should work, but if you run into issues, the Android guide has the same steps with more detail.

Do not confuse this with Minecraft Education. Education Edition on Chromebooks is a different product. Custom skin packs installed in Bedrock will not appear in Education, and vice versa.

Use a single custom skin (no pack needed)

If you just have one skin PNG and do not want to deal with a full pack, you can import it directly through the Dressing Room. This works on Chromebook because it is the same Android app.

  1. Save the skin PNG to your Chromebook (Downloads folder is fine).
  2. Open Minecraft → Dressing Room.
  3. Go to Classic Skins.
  4. Click Choose New Skin.
  5. Pick the PNG file from your Downloads or gallery.
  6. Choose the correct model type: Classic (4-pixel arms, Steve-style) or Slim (3-pixel arms, Alex-style).
  7. The skin appears under Owned Skins. Select it and click Equip.

Picking the wrong model type (Classic vs Slim) can make the arms look cut off or leave a visible gap. If that happens, remove the skin and re-import it with the other model type.

Skin pack not showing? Fixes

If your skin pack will not appear or the import fails, work through these fixes in order:

  1. Turn off "Only Allow Trusted Skins." Go to Settings → General tab and make sure Only Allow Trusted Skins is toggled off. This is the most common reason a custom pack is hidden.
  2. Check the .mcpack structure. The file must contain manifest.json at the root of the zip, not inside an extra folder. If you made the pack yourself, re-zip the files (not the folder) and rename to .mcpack.
  3. Verify the UUIDs. The header and module in manifest.json must have two different UUIDs. Reusing a UUID from another pack will cause a conflict. Generate two new v4 UUIDs if in doubt.
  4. Match your lang keys. In texts/en_US.lang, the keys must match the localization_name values in skins.json exactly. A mismatch shows blank or raw-key names in game.
  5. Use the right geometry string. It must be exactly geometry.humanoid.custom (Classic) or geometry.humanoid.customSlim (Slim). It is case-sensitive.
  6. Keep PNGs in the pack root. Skin images must sit at the top level of the pack, not in a subfolder. The texture value in skins.json must match the file name exactly, including capitalisation and extension.
  7. Free up storage. If you see "Something went wrong. This may be due to insufficient storage space," delete unused files and retry the import.

Still stuck? Compare your pack file-by-file with the official Microsoft sample skin pack. If yours matches the sample structure, it should import.

FAQ

Do skin packs carry over to other devices?

Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account, so a pack you buy on your Chromebook will be available on your phone, Windows PC, or console (where the Marketplace exists). However, custom imported skins do not sync. A .mcpack you import on your Chromebook stays on that device only. You will need to import it separately on each device.

Are skin packs free?

Some Marketplace skin packs are free; others cost Minecoins. Custom packs downloaded from websites (like the ones on this site) are typically free. You can browse free and paid packs to see what is available.

Can I make my own skin pack?

Yes. You need a skin PNG (64×64 or 128×128), a manifest.json, a skins.json, and a texts/en_US.lang file. Zip them up and rename to .mcpack. See the how-to-make guide for full instructions, or use the Skin Pack Creator tool to build one in your browser.

Will this work on Minecraft Education?

No. This guide is for Minecraft Bedrock (the Google Play app). Minecraft Education is a separate product with different rules, and custom skin packs installed in Bedrock will not appear in Education.

Can I use custom skins on Xbox or PlayStation?

No. Custom skin import (both single PNGs and .mcpack files) is not available on consoles. On Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch you are limited to Marketplace packs and Character Creator.

My skin looks wrong: arms are cut off or there is a gap.

You likely imported a Classic (4-pixel arm) skin as Slim, or vice versa. Remove the skin, re-import it, and choose the other model type. In a skin pack, check that the geometry field in skins.json matches the skin you drew.
