This guide walks you through installing Minecraft skin packs on an Android phone or tablet. You can grab packs straight from the in-game Marketplace, or download a custom .mcpack file and open it with Minecraft. Both methods are quick once you know where to tap.

Quick answer: tap the .mcpack file in your Files or Downloads app, choose Minecraft in the "Open with" menu, and the game imports it automatically. Then go to the Dressing Room, pick Classic Skins, select your skin and tap Equip. On Android 14 and later you may not be able to browse to the com.mojang folder by hand, so opening the file with Minecraft is the way to go.

Quick answer

  • Marketplace packs: open the in-game Marketplace, buy or unlock a pack with Minecoins, then equip it from the Dressing Room.
  • Custom packs (.mcpack): tap the file in your Files or Downloads app, choose Minecraft when asked, and the pack imports automatically.
  • Single skin (PNG): Dressing Room → Classic Skins → Choose New Skin → pick the image → select Classic or Slim model.
  • Android 14+ note: scoped storage may block manual folder access, so always open the .mcpack with Minecraft rather than copying files by hand.

Get skin packs from the Marketplace on Android

The in-game Marketplace is the easiest way to get skin packs on Android. No files to move, no folders to find. Purchases are tied to your Microsoft account, so they follow you across devices.

  1. Open Minecraft and make sure you are signed in with your Microsoft account.
  2. From the main menu, tap the Marketplace button (the shop icon).
  3. Browse the Skins tab, or use Featured and New Releases to discover packs. You can also browse my skin packs and find them in the store.
  4. Tap a pack to preview it. If it costs Minecoins, tap Buy and confirm the purchase. Free packs just need a tap to unlock.
  5. Once downloaded, go to the Dressing Room (the clothes-hanger icon on the main menu).
  6. Select Classic Skins (or Owned Skins if you see that tab instead).
  7. Find the new pack, pick the skin you want, and tap Equip.

Some Marketplace skin packs are restricted from cross-platform or multiplayer play. If you see a message like "The Skin that you have equipped is from a content pack that is not allowed in cross-platform multiplayer games," you will need to pick a different skin for those sessions.

Install a custom skin pack (.mcpack)

Custom skin packs come as a single .mcpack file. On Android the whole install is just a tap or two, and you do not need to find any folders.

  1. Download the .mcpack file. It will usually land in your Downloads folder or wherever your browser saves files.
  2. Open your Files app (or the browser's download list) and tap the .mcpack file. Android will show an "Open with" dialog.
  3. Select Minecraft from the list. The game launches and imports the pack. You should see a message confirming the import was successful.
  4. Go to the Dressing Room from the main menu.
  5. Tap Classic Skins. Your new pack should be listed there.
  6. Select the skin you want and tap Equip. Done. Your character is ready.

Android 14 and later: scoped storage changes mean you may no longer be able to browse to the com.mojang/skin_packs folder manually. That is fine. Opening the .mcpack file with Minecraft (steps 2-3 above) is the supported way and works on every Android version.

Use a single custom skin (PNG)

If you have a single skin image (a .png file, 64×64 or 128×128 pixels) rather than a full pack, you can import it directly without any JSON files.

  1. Open the Dressing Room from the main menu.
  2. Tap Classic Skins.
  3. Tap Choose New Skin.
  4. Pick the PNG from your Downloads folder or photo gallery.
  5. When asked to choose the model type, pick Classic (4-pixel arms, Steve-style) or Slim (3-pixel arms, Alex-style). Matching the right one prevents a visible gap or cut-off on the arms.
  6. Tap Equip to apply it.

Single skins you import this way appear under Owned Skins in the Dressing Room.

Skin pack not showing? Fixes

If your skin pack will not appear or the skin looks wrong, work through this list. It covers the most common Android-specific and general issues.

  1. Turn off "Only Allow Trusted Skins." Go to Settings → General and make sure Only Allow Trusted Skins is toggled off. This is the single most common reason a custom pack does not show up.
  2. Check the zip structure. If you made the pack yourself, the manifest.json must be at the very top of the zip: not inside a wrapper folder. Re-zip the files directly and rename to .mcpack.
  3. Use two different UUIDs. The header and the module in manifest.json each need their own unique UUID. Reusing one (or copying another pack's UUID) will make the game ignore the pack.
  4. Validate your JSON. A missing comma, trailing comma, or wrong quote in manifest.json or skins.json will silently break the import. Paste the file into any free JSON validator to check.
  5. Match the geometry name exactly. Use geometry.humanoid.custom for Classic or geometry.humanoid.customSlim for Slim. It is case-sensitive, and a typo means the skin will not render.
  6. Check the texture file name. The texture value in skins.json must match the PNG file name exactly (including capitalisation and extension), and the PNG must sit in the pack root, not a subfolder.
  7. Android 14+ folder access. If you were trying to copy files into com.mojang/skin_packs by hand and cannot find the folder, stop. Use the "open the .mcpack with Minecraft" method instead. It works on all versions.

FAQ

Do skin packs carry over to other devices?

Marketplace purchases follow your Microsoft account, so a pack you buy on Android is available on your Windows PC, Xbox, or any other Bedrock device. Custom (imported) skins, however, are stored on the device you imported them to. You will need to open the .mcpack on each device separately.

Are skin packs free?

Some Marketplace content is free, but most skin packs cost Minecoins. You can also make your own custom pack for free: see the how-to-make guide or try the Skin Pack Creator tool right in your browser.

Can I make my own skin pack?

Yes. You need a PNG skin image (64×64 or 128×128), a manifest.json, a skins.json, and a short en_US.lang file. Zip them up and rename to .mcpack. The step-by-step guide walks you through every file, and the Skin Pack Creator builds the whole thing for you in the browser.

Will this work on Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch?

No. Custom skin import (both .mcpack files and single PNGs) is not available on consoles. On those platforms you can use Marketplace skin packs and the Character Creator, but you cannot import your own files.

My Android 14 phone will not let me find the com.mojang folder. What do I do?

That is expected. Android 14 tightened file-access permissions (scoped storage). You do not need to find the folder. Simply tap the .mcpack file in your Files or Downloads app and choose Minecraft from the "Open with" menu. The game handles the rest.
