What is the difference between skin packs and Persona?

Classic skins (from skin packs) are a single full-body PNG texture applied to your character, and you can create your own. Persona (Character Creator) lets you build a character piece by piece from existing items (body, hair, clothing, accessories). Custom skin import works on Windows and mobile but not on consoles; the Character Creator works on every platform.

In Minecraft Bedrock you have two main ways to change how your character looks: Classic Skins (delivered through skin packs) and the Character Creator (formerly called Persona). They do very different things, and you can use both at the same time.

This guide breaks down what each one is, where you get them, and which one fits the look you want.

The short answer

Here is the side-by-side comparison:

Classic Skin (skin pack)Character Creator (Persona)
What it isA full-body PNG texture placed on your character. It cannot be modified piece by piece.A custom character built item by item: body, hair, eyes, clothing, accessories and more.
Where you get itImport a .mcpack file, buy from the in-game Marketplace, or use a single PNG via "Choose New Skin".Free default items, Marketplace purchases (Minecoins), achievements, limited-time events, and download codes.
Can you make your own?Yes: any PNG at 64×64 (or 64×32 / 128×128) works. Use my free Skin Pack Creator or grab a free template. No: you can only combine items that already exist in the game.
Works on consoles?Marketplace skin packs: yes. Custom .mcpack import: no (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch).Yes, on all platforms including consoles.

Both systems live in the same place: the Dressing Room on the main menu. You can switch between a Classic Skin and a Character Creator character at any time.

Classic skins and skin packs

A Classic Skin is a single full-body image (a PNG file) that replaces your character's entire texture. The official description says: "A full body skin that is placed on the character. Classic skins cannot be modified piece by piece. You can also import your own full body skin that you created or downloaded."

There are three ways to get one:

  • Single PNG import. Open the Dressing Room → Classic Skins → Choose New Skin, then pick a PNG file and select Classic (4-pixel arms) or Slim (3-pixel arms). The skin appears under Owned Skins.
  • Skin pack (.mcpack). A zip file containing a manifest.json, a skins.json, one or more PNGs, and a texts/en_US.lang file. Double-click (Windows) or open with Minecraft (mobile) to import. The pack shows up under Classic Skins in the Dressing Room.
  • Marketplace. Buy or unlock a skin pack with Minecoins. Purchases follow your Microsoft account across devices.

Custom skin import (both single PNGs and .mcpack files) works on Windows and mobile devices. It is not available on consoles: on Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch you are limited to Marketplace skin packs and the Character Creator.

I make free skin packs you can download and install on any supported platform. Browse them at my skin packs page, or build your own in the browser with the Skin Pack Creator (no install needed). If you are starting from scratch, the free skin pack template gives you a working .mcpack to edit.

Persona and the Character Creator

The Character Creator (formerly called Persona) lets you build a character piece by piece instead of applying one flat texture. The in-game description: "Create a custom character in Minecraft piece by piece. Personalize your character's body, eyes, mouth, hairstyles, clothing, and more!"

The available categories are:

  • Body: base body, hair, eyes, mouth, facial hair, arms, legs, and size.
  • Style: top, bottom, outerwear, headwear, gloves, footwear, face items, and back items.
  • Emotes: animations your character can perform.
  • Capes: decorative cloaks that appear behind your character.

Items come from several sources: free defaults, Minecoin purchases in the Marketplace, achievements, limited-time events, and download codes. Each item has a rarity tier: Common, Uncommon, Rare, Epic, or Legendary.

Unlike Classic Skins, the Character Creator works on every platform, including Xbox, PlayStation and Nintendo Switch. It is the only way to customise your character on consoles beyond Marketplace skin packs.

I also create Persona items (clothing, accessories, emotes) available through the Marketplace. If you like mixing and matching outfits, those are for you.

Switching between them

You do not have to choose one forever. The Dressing Room holds five skin slots, and you can switch between a Classic Skin and a Character Creator character at any time from the main menu.

When you equip a Classic Skin while a Character Creator character is active in a world, the game shows this warning:

"If you have a Character Creator in world, this will switch to the Classic Skin. You can still switch back to the Character Creator in Dressing room."

In other words: equipping a Classic Skin temporarily replaces your Character Creator look in that world, but your Character Creator setup is not lost. Go back to the Dressing Room and switch whenever you like.

Some Marketplace skin packs are restricted from cross-platform or multiplayer play. If you see the message "The Skin that you have equipped is from a content pack that is not allowed in cross-platform multiplayer games," you will need to pick a different skin for those sessions.

Which should you use?

It depends on what you want:

  • Want a specific character design (a YouTuber avatar, an anime character, a custom OC)? → Classic Skin. Draw or find a 64×64 PNG, import it, done. Use the Skin Pack Creator to turn it into a shareable .mcpack.
  • Want to mix and match: swap hairstyles, try different outfits, add a cape? → Character Creator. No drawing required; just pick items.
  • On a console (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch)? → Character Creator or Marketplace skin packs. Custom .mcpack import is not supported.
  • Want to share your skin with friends? → Classic Skin in a .mcpack file is the easiest thing to send.

And of course, you can use both. Many players keep a Classic Skin for one world and a Character Creator look for another, switching in the Dressing Room as they go.

FAQ

Can I use a skin pack and the Character Creator at the same time?

Yes. They are separate systems in the same Dressing Room. You switch between them, but both remain available. Your Character Creator items are not affected by importing a skin pack, and vice versa.

Do skin packs work on Xbox, PlayStation or Nintendo Switch?

Marketplace skin packs work on all consoles. However, importing custom .mcpack files or single PNG skins is not supported on any console. For custom looks on console, use the Character Creator.

Are Persona (Character Creator) items free?

Some are. The default body, basic hair and a few style items are free. Additional items can be purchased with Minecoins in the Marketplace, earned through achievements, obtained from limited-time events, or redeemed with download codes.

Can I make my own Persona items?

No. Unlike Classic Skins, you cannot create custom Character Creator items yourself. You can only combine items that already exist in the game. If you want a fully custom look, a Classic Skin is the way to go.

Where can I find free skin packs?

Get the free FoxyNoTail skin pack or browse my skin packs on the Marketplace. You can also build your own in the browser with the Skin Pack Creator or start from the free template.

What is the difference between Classic and Slim?

Classic (Steve-style) has 4-pixel-wide arms. Slim (Alex-style) has 3-pixel-wide arms, making them 25% narrower. In a skin pack this is set per skin with geometry.humanoid.custom or geometry.humanoid.customSlim. When importing a single PNG, the game asks you to choose. Picking the wrong one makes the arms look cut off or shows a gap. Just re-import and pick the other option.

Do custom skins sync between my phone and PC?

No. Custom imported skins are stored on the device you import them to. You will need to import the .mcpack on each device separately. Marketplace purchases, however, follow your Microsoft account and appear on any signed-in device.
